Undivided devotion to God is only possible if it is not frittered away in running schools, dispensaries and hospitals, in construction of Deras and large mansions, in publicity and self-glorification, in accumulation of wealth and riches of the world. These Niyems (Principles) substantiate Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj’s total detachment from this mundane world in exactly the same manner as the Lotus is unaffected and detached from the mire in which it stands.
These Niyems, Precepts, Dictates further prove that He had no selfish aim to realise. He was totally above self-glorification, name and fame. He had completely merged in God and it was God who was enacting a Divine Play in the Holy garb of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.
He was totally free from any thought and feeling of attachment, selfishness, mine and thine. Such feelings and thoughts are non-existent only in a state of perfect illumination.
His mind and soul were one-pointedly fixed on the Lotus Feet of His Beloved Lord Guru Nanak from His very childhood and these stood totally withdrawn from this transitory and perishable world. He was solely devoted to God, totally immersed in Supreme Divine Bliss.
Such blessed soul, mind and the body becomes the Image of God. Such a holy being cannot exist independent of the Light of God; the Divine Name fills every pore of His Body. Body becomes a part of God’s Body. The Will becomes a part of the Cosmic Will, God’s Will.
God’s Light and God’s Will radiate out from such a Holy Being and it is such a Holy person, the dust of whose Holy feet makes the earth which He treads also Holy. God is represented only by such a Holy person. He is the visible Form of God on earth. He is a True Illuminator.
Purity and impurity cannot simultaneously co-exist.
A pure mind is Jot-Saroop. A pure mind drenched in Divine Love cannot simultaneously indulge in Kamini and Kanchan, politics, name and fame, in self-glorification, monetary appeals, in accumulating wealth and worldly riches. A pure mind is filled with Divine Light. It is filled with Pure Bliss. A true Saint will never contaminate and pollute this Pure Light and Pure Bliss with anything worldly in content. Because Light and Darkness cannot simultaneously co-exist, Divine love and love of worldliness cannot co-exist, knowledge and ignorance cannot co-exist. His mind stood totally purged of all thoughts of Kamini and Kanchan, publicity, name and fame. That is why worldliness stands totally banished from His Pure Maryada. He never talked of worldliness nor He ever permitted anyone to talk anything worldly in His presence or in the places He stayed. No worldly thought could dare enter into the Holy dwelling places of Mahan Baba Ji. Such was the Powerful Miracle of the All Pervading Divine Name in His Holy Presence.
He strictly observed these Niyems or spiritual cannons till the end.
Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj stood above all mundane and selfish concerns and consequently shines at the pinnacle of all Spiritual Glory.
Bhao Bhagat means Devotion. Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Himself unfolds the Secret of Devotion—The Jugti of Bhagti. How wonderful is the glory of Humility—Nimrata? Devotion—Bhagti is the most precious Commodity, it is the most sacred Possession, it is the most secret Endeavour, it is the rarest jewel, it is the most blessed Grace of the Lord. It has to be treasured in Secret and in the Sacred depths of the heart well protected from vulgar display and publicity. Bhagti, true Prema means exclusive Love and Pleasure of the Satguru. It cannot be diluted, polluted and contaminated with outward show and worldliness. Bhagti is never meant to impress the people.
All the nine types of Bhagti—Devotion i.e. Nam-Simran, Kirtan, Sewa and so on are beautifully blended together in this Holy Maryada. Prema Bhagti reigns Supreme.
Love-smitten true Divine Lovers least care for the worldly comforts. Our Beloved Lord Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib spends the longest period of His young life, in total solitude in meditation in a basement (Bhora) at Baba Bakala. Our Supreme Lord Guru Nanak covers the vast inhospitable areas of the world in His most famous Udasies. Sri Guru Amar Das Ji spends long years of His old age in fetching water from long distance for the holy bath of His Beloved Sri Guru Nanak Sahib, the Second. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib sits in deep meditation in unprecedented Tapasaya at Hem Kund Sahib totally immersed at the Holy Feet of the Lord,
Love smitten Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj spent His whole life in most inhospitable places in total solitude and silence in the love, of His most Beloved Sri Guru Nanak Sahib.

Totally immersed in the worship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, His whole concern was to direct and focus attention, the devotion of the whole world to Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Not to Himself. These Niyems, Resolves, Vows indicate a state of total desirelessness, total self-abnegation, total tyag and total detachment from all worldly riches, politics, hunger of name and fame, self-glorification. That is why His flawless devotion floods the whole universe with matchless purity and with the Supreme and Eternal Glory of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
His flawless Maryada sustains the devotion of an aspirant in Sri Guru Granth Sahib throughout his life. It fascinates the whole world by the Divine Glow of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib’s Eternal Presence.
It appeals to all classes of people and fascinates them all. It spiritually delights and charms all, literate and illiterate, rich and poor, high and low.
He never publicised and advertised Himself because name and fame, self-glorification were mere taboos for Him. These were meaningless and totally non-existent in His life. And surprisingly enough, in the total absence of any publicity and advertisement, He flooded the whole Universe with Eternal Glory of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. This in itself is the Greatest Divine Miracle.
He carved out a new holy culture, a new holy tradition, a new holy Maryada. A Unique Maryada of total Desirelessness. A Maryada in which no boons are sought, no rewards are asked for and there is no scope for self glorification. A Maryada which is totally free from the fetters of Kamini and Kanchan (woman and gold), honour and publicity, fame and name.
His Holy Maryada is like a Saviour Ship filled to the brim with all the Divine Wisdom of Eternity, with all the Spiritual Treasures of Universality and with overwhelming spirit of Synthesis and Harmony.
This Maryada is the highest Model for all true aspirants (selfless lovers of God).
In this Maryada reigns the spirit of true Vairag, the spirit of total detachment, the spirit of exclusive love, adoration and worship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
This Maryada embraces the Divine and the whole of His creation. The blessed children of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib will pluck and enjoy the fruits of this Unique Maryada for all times to come.
This Maryada seeks nothing else but God. This Maryada does not cater for anything worldly. In this Maryada there is no thirst for anything else, as it is free from all cravings and wants.
Maryada in its totality is Divine and every breath spent in this Maryada becomes Divine.
Maryada based on such golden concepts transforms the adherents as Masters of the World and not as its slaves.
This Maryada commands and demands your wholesale surrender and sacrifice at the Lotus Feet of ‘Pargat Guran Ki Deh’, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. There is no scope for demonstration, show, publicity and advertisement in this Holy Maryada.
He had bid goodbye to the relish of worldliness, of all desires from his very childhood. A saint can never be intoxicated with worldliness and be a victim of desires.
It is a Maryada which stands on total cessation of wants, desires and boons.
Relish of any want disappears in the one who yearns for the Donor only, for the one who has tasted the Prem Ras. For such an exalted and blessed soul, diversion of any attention from God, in running community kitchens, dispensaries and hospitals, schools and colleges, in construction of buildings and deras, in publicity and demonstration, in show and self-glorification assumes total insignificance.
Being a born Prophet Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj had nothing to accomplish for Himself. He had nothing to do for His personal benefit or gain something. He therefore set out a Maryada aglow with perfect desirelessness, selflessness, non-attachment. And Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj alone was capable of accomplishing all this so perfectly, so magnificently in this dark age of Kalyug.
For Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, the Kingdom of Earth and Heavens, and attainment of Moksha were meaningless and worthless compared to the Love of Lord Guru Nanak. And hence there was total self-restraint, self-denial from anything called worldly.
Even at the tender age of five, He was in the most exalted state of Divine Love-Prema of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. His resolve was unique, never witnessed on this mother earth earlier. Let the body wither, let the life perish in Love of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib. Such was the firm resolve of this Child God from that very tender age.
He had sacrificed his all at the Sacred Feet of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at that very tender age. The greatest epoch-making life was yet to follow.
Everything animate and inanimate in the whole world stands on the support of God. World is a mere reflection or shadow of God. His Grand Niyems Validate His sole concern with the only Real Substance and Essence that is God and no concern with the shadow or reflection thereof (the world).
These Niyems wonderfully reflect the totality of Divine, disinterested and Impersonal nature of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.
